Mrs. Herrera & Mrs. Deters

  Meet the Teachers

There are two teachers that will be working with your children this year.  There will be one instructional aide who will work 1 ½ hours in each class.

Primary Teacher in AM TK:  Kimi Herrera

When I was little, I would line up all my stuffed animals and would play school – so it was destiny!  After graduating from UCLA with a B.A. in psychology with a specialization in liberal arts, a Masters of Education, and a multiple subject credential, I headed to my hometown of Tustin to teach kindergarten.  The commute finally got to me after 3 years -- and I got hired in the Etiwanda School District. I opened up Terra Vista Elementary 25 years ago – teaching first grade with Mrs. Deters! We immediately knew that we were a great team.  However, after getting married to my husband Ray (who now teaches elementary P.E.) and having my daughter, Kiana (now 22), I took a leave to be with her and ended up staying home for 9 years to take care of her and our two sons, Xavier (now 20) and Roman (now 18). Thirteen years ago I returned to education and taught third, first, and then kindergarten again. Nine years ago, I went back to school and received my Mild/Moderate Education Specialist credential along with my Autism Authorization certificate.  I taught K-3 students with Special Needs for 5 years at Etiwanda Colony. Five years ago, I was given the amazing opportunity to work again with my partner, Mrs. Deters, in a whole new adventure of Transitional Kindergarten! We received our Transitional Kindergarten Teaching Certificates through the University of La Verne. Two years ago when Falcon Ridge Elementary School opened, Mrs. Deters taught TK and I taught kindergarten. Last year we switched and I had the opportunity to teach TK. This year we are super duper excited to both be teaching TK and to continue our adventure teaching together!

Primary Teacher in PM TK: Billie Deters

As a child I spent many hours hanging out after school in my parents’ classrooms.  You see they were both educators. Unlike my friend, Kimi Herrera, I did not see the vision of becoming a teacher right away.  In fact, my parents used to say that I would make a great teacher. I told them, “There is NO way I am becoming a teacher!” Well, as my life unfolded I soon found myself in education classes receiving my B.A. in Liberal Studies at Cal State San Bernardino. I then finished my education receiving my Masters in Curriculum and Instruction and multiple subject teaching credential from Chapman University.  Simultaneously, while pursuing my education and teaching credential I married my high school sweetheart, Randy and had three beautiful daughters- Nicole and Brianna (whom are both adults and mothers themselves making me a grandmother of five!), and Makenna (18years and a college freshman).  I have been teaching for 27 years- starting off at Terra Vista Elementary with Kimi Herrera, moving on to teach kindergarten at David W. Long Elementary, and then I moved to Etiwanda Colony Elementary twelve years ago. I have taught transitional kindergarten, kindergarten, first, and second grades over this long career.  I am “over the moon” excited to be teaching here at Falcon Ridge with Kimi Herrera. The adventure has begun and I am excited that you will be along for the ride!

Instructional Aide for both AM TK and PM TK: Jennifer Lodahl

It all started when I volunteered in my son’s kindergarten class every day.  The next year, his teacher encouraged me to become an instructional aide to get paid for all my time.  That year, the TK program at Etiwanda Colony had just started and I jumped aboard and worked with Mrs. Herrera and Mrs. Deters.  When Falcon Ridge Elementary School opened two years ago, we moved our TK team here. This is the first year that my son Robert and I will be at different schools as he is starting 6th grade at Summit Intermediate School and I am thrilled to be here once again in TK!
